CLASSIFICATION SOCIETY

Shipping is, statistically, the least environmentally damaging mode of transport, when its productive value is taken into consideration. Moreover, set against land-based industry, shipping is, overall, a comparatively minor contributor to marine pollution from human activities. The carbon footprint is also an important component of the ecological footprint, since it is one of the competing demands for biologically productive space.

Importance of shipping:

Maritime transport contributes to more than 95% of the world trade volume, at a rate of 11 billion tons annually. This is an almost unbelievable number, especially considering the fact that only 50,000 merchant ships perform this gigantic business.
Not to mention providing thousands of jobs opportunities annually for seafarers of all ranks. According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), there are more than 1.8 million seafarers working on ships globally, in addition to more than 20 million workers supporting or dealing with the maritime industry, such as shore staff, dock workers, ship designers and builders, and marine engineers .
On the other hand, shipping is responsible for only 1.7% of global greenhouse gas emissions. This means that maritime transport is the most efficient mode of transport when it comes to greenhouse gas emissions per ton/kilometre.
In short, maritime transport is the backbone of the global economy, and without it, international trade will stop.
